Militären Jack O´Niel skickas iväg för att undersöka ett mystiskt arkeologiskt fynd som hittats i Egypten 1928. Till sin hjälp har han egyptologen Daniel Jackson. Fyndet visar sig vara en port som leder till andra stjärnor. Jackson och O´Neil beslutar sig för att pröva om porten verkligen fungerar.
