Handling:

Filmen handler om 11 år gamle Billy Elliot (Jamie Bell) som vokser opp i et gruvesamfunn i nord-England under den store gruvearbeiderstreiken. Han er sønn av en gruvearbeider, og bor sammen med sin eldre bror, mormor og far. Moren er død. Billys far og storebroren Tony, som også er gruvearbeider, er sentrale personer i arbeidernes kamp. Med far som pådriver går Billy på boksetrening. Billy er fornøyd med sitt fotarbeid, men selve boksingen er det så som så med. Den store forandringen i Billys liv skjer når byens ballettklasse midlertidig må flytte inn i bokselokalene. Når Billy får i oppgave av boksetreneren å bli igjen for å levere nøklene til ballettlæreren Fru Wilkinson (Julie Walter), benytter han sjansen til å prøve seg litt.

1984: In a northern England mining town, miners are on strike and the atmosphere is tense.
