Quando o irresistível Joe (Bruce Willis) e o hipocondríaco Terry (Billy Bob Thornton) fogem da prisão, eles decidem aplicar uma série de roubos a banco de Oregon até a Califórnia, a fim de bancar suas novas vidas. Mas para realizar os roubos eles agem de forma inusitada: vão até a casa do gerente no dia anterior ao assalto e lá passam a noite, para depois poderem realizar o roubo. Logo eles se tornam os assaltantes a banco de maior sucesso na história dos Estados Unidos, sendo perseguidos pela mídia e pela polícia e adorados pelo grande público. Até que em meio a um assalto eles encontram Kate (Cate Blanchett), que vê na possibilidade de seguir junto com Terry e Joe a chance de escapar de sua vida tediosa. Os dois amigos logo se apaixonam por Kate, que considera o homem ideal uma perfeita combinação dos dois. Mas a situação se complica quando a polícia acredita que Kate é na verdade uma refém de Terry e Joe e resolve realizar uma gigantesca caçada humana a fim de capturá-los.

When the irresistible Joe (Bruce Willis) and a hypochondriac Terry (Billy Bob Thornton) escaping from jail, they decide to apply a series of bank robberies from Oregon to California in order to afford their new lives. But to carry out the robberies they act in an unusual way: go to the manager's house the day before the assault, and spend the night there, and then they can carry out the theft. Soon they become bank robbers most successful in the history of the United States, being persecuted by the media and the police and adored by the public. Until in the midst of a robbery they find Kate (Cate Blanchett), who sees the possibility to follow along with Terry and Joe a chance to escape his boring life. The two friends soon fall in love with Kate, who believes the ideal man a perfect combination of the two. But the situation is complicated when police believe Kate is actually a hostage Terry and Joe and solves carry a huge manhunt to capture them.
