A Story of a Political prisoner in Russia - played by Anthony Quinn - who was set free by his captor to become a Roman Catholic Cardinal in the hopes he can be a puppet of Russia and help avert trouble with China. However, after the death of the Pope he ascends to the papacy and asserts his long standing faith together with his new political power in ways Russia or China could not have predicted.

The movies as a whole is not all that great but Anthony Quinn's portrayal of a man who has endured years of suffering and still managed to retain a deep faith in God and his fellow man is very inspiring - one of his personal best performances.
