Welcome to the weird and wonderful world of Harpoon magazine, packed with strange characters and baffling content galore; some spiffing good fun from the spoof magazine for boys who like a jolly wheeze.





The programme was a spoof of boys' comics from the Empire days of the 20th century, featuring "Your old chum" the Editor (McGowan) presenting regular features, adventure stories, practical advice, readers letters, etc complete with advertisements. An enthusiastic young reader could be heard turning the pages and occasionally commenting.





The humour dealt with the anachronistic, politically incorrect attitudes towards education, class, sex, race, war, etc and patronising style represented by such publications as Boy's Own Paper.



Pip pip! The Harpoon was a rip-roaring dig at the world of Edwardian boys' comics, featuring thrilling accounts of jungle exploration, practical tips for growing lads, jolly japes voiced by cheery cockneys, advice on warding off the attentions of foreigners and assorted "tales of derring-do and derring-don't".
