Principalmente em Kray, no interior da Sibéria, um lugarejo povoado pelos traidores da pátria, cuja principal função agora é a de fornecer carvão para a velha locomotiva que corta a densa floresta boreal. Ignat, um condecorado herói de guerra e aficionado por trens, é enviado pelo governo para coordenar o trabalho local. Mas fortes dores de cabeça e alucinações começam a interferir com sua rotina.
