Al finds out that an old family friend, Bessie Grindle (Bette Davis), is in a charity ward and has lost the will to live. The doctor suggests that she needs an occupation, a hobby. Since Bessie Grindle "was the greatest female jewel thief that ever lived", Al invites her on a caper for which he needs her "magic touch".
