Todd Burpo (Greg Kinnear) is the pastor of a church in Nebraska, which has a fairly faithful congregation. Married to Sonja (Kelly Reilly), he faces a tricky situation when his son, Colton (Connor Corum), must be operated in a hurry due to an appendicitis. After recovering, the boy tells his father that angels came and sang to him during the operation. Todd asks about the experience and is amazed when Colton tells him that he saw situations that occurred when the boy was not awake. Convinced that her son visited paradise, Todd begins to question his own faith in what he preached until then.
