Yet a war-time-spirit grew as the British people experienced the Blackout, the Blitz and Rationing, whilst being encouraged to "dig for victory," "fight on the beaches," "never surrender," waste nothing and learn to cook with dried egg.

This program is a celebration of that Island dweller's resolve that refused to be quashed and contributed significantly to the restoration of peace on a worldwide scale. Follow the progress of war from the first skirmishes through the major battles, and with the help of archive footage enjoy a rare glimpse of the British nation at war. The Second World War was fought on Eastern and Western fronts, across the Atlantic, the Pacific and the English Channel, but the battles fought on the home front were equally important.
