The film is based on the play by Edmond Rostand, which premiered on 28 December 1897 at the Theatre de la Porte Saint-Martin, and is widely regarded as one of the greatest comedic works in the history of French theatre. American viewers will best know the plotline from the 1987 film Roxanne, starring Steve Martin and a prosthetic nose.

Hector Savinien de Cyrano de Bergerac was a real person who lived a short 36 years in the early-mid 17th century; he really was a dramatist and duelist, and he really did have a larger-than-average nose.
