Rasmus is an orphan living in a strict state home. Rasmus runs away from the orphanage after resigning himself to never being chosen for adoption. On the road he finds a warm barn to sleep in. The next morning, he realizes he has shared the hay with a tramp, Oskar. Oskar treats Rasmus to a share of his breakfast and then a share of the wandering life as they encounter one adventure after another. They discover that they share a common stigma, for no one likes a hobo or an orphan. Their friendship grows into a strong bond, ending in the formation of a comfortable home for both wanderers.
