The era of early guns lasted for nearly 800 years, from the discovery of gunpowder around the year 1000 to the widespread use of the flintlock musket as late as the 19th century. Galileo and other scientists brought mathematics to the battlefield, ushering in the field of ballistics, while the availability of guns made it possible for many colonists to rise up against their rulers.
