Wanneer de lappenpop 9 (Elijah Wood), voor het eerst tot leven komt ziet hij dat hij zich in een post-apocalyptische wereld bevindt. Al het menselijk leven is verdwenen, maar bij toeval vindt hij een kleine gemeeschap soortgenoten die zich verstoppen voor de vreselijke machines die op aarde rondzwerven. Deze machines proberen alles en iedereen uit te roeien, omdat zij de volledige controle en macht over de wereld willen hebben. 9 weet - ondanks dat hij het groentje uit de groep is - zijn soortgenoten te overtuigen dat verstoppen geen oplossing is. Ze moeten terugslaan als ze willen overleven. Wat ze snel zullen leren is dat de toekomst van hun beschaving van hunzelf afhangt...

When 9 first comes to life, he finds himself in a post-apocalyptic world where all humans are gone, and it is only by chance that he discovers a small community of others like him taking refuge from fearsome machines that roam the earth intent on their extinction. Despite being the neophyte of the group, 9 convinces the others that hiding will do them no good. They must take the offensive if they are to survive, and they must discover why the machines want to destroy them in the first place. As they'll soon come to learn, the very future of civilization may depend on them.
