From the two-part story "Lassie's Gift of Love." Miracles seem to happen after a mysterious, bearded stranger named Mr. Nicholson arrives in the neighbourhood around Christmas.

Mr. Nicholson, who is staying with the Martins, is helping the Calverton Ladies' Aid to provide toys for children who are in hospital. Timmy is busy feeding the starving woods animals, but the food draws wolves who start killing farm animals, invoking the wrath of neighbor Mr. Krebs who insists Timmy stop. And on Christmas Eve, Lassie doesn't come home.
