P L O T



Set in a shantytown on the outskirts of Lisbon,
Portugal, director Pedro Costa's provocative and
unflinching film centers on a pair of drug addicts who
live there: Vanda Duarte and her sister, Zita (who play
themselves). While the siblings smoke crack and engage
in rambling discussions, the ghetto area that they and
other junkies call home -- the Fontainhas district --
is gradually being demolished.
