An Iowa farmer, Ray Kinsella (Kevin Costner), hears the following phrase: "If you build it, it will come." At first Ray thought it was just his imagination, because his wife, Annie (Amy Madigan), did not hear anything and their daughter, Karin (Gaby Hoffman), also heard nothing. Moreover, the voice did not explain what he should build and who would come because of it.

Ray has some visions and understands that he should build a baseball field, which will cause "Shoeless" Joe Jackson (Ray Liotta) to play again. It turns out that Joe had not played for more than 50 years, because in 1920, along with 7 other players, he was accused of handing the championship and prevented from playing forever. Joe was not even alive and even though knowing that building a baseball field would affect his corn plantation and would leave him in a delicate financial position, Ray decides to follow the voice request. What was to come was something Ray and his family could not imagine.
