General Irwin (Robert Redford) is a US Army military decorate who loses his patent and his freedom after being unjustly convicted by a military court to spend the rest of his life in a maximum security penitentiary. There he meets Colonel Winter (James Gandolfini), who runs the prison with an iron fist. At first there is a reciprocal respect between them, which soon becomes resentment after Irwin disagrees with some of Winter's methods of commanding the prison. Willing to shut down Irwin anyway, Winter's tactics only motivate him to lead a prisoner rebellion to get him out of power.
