"Black Heart Inertia" is the twentieth and first of the two new singles from the compilation album Monuments and Melodies released in the United States by rock group Incubus. The single was first streamed on the band's official site. The song currently peaked at #9 on Modern Rock Tracks and #34 on Mainstream Rock Tracks.

The music video shows Brandon Boyd, working on a set. He is seen giving a drink to another Brandon Boyd who is preparing to sing the song. The latter one spits it out, becoming unable to continue the music video. The director of the music video coincidentally notices the striking similarities between the two Brandon Boyds,immediately telling his assistants to prepare the former for the music video. The rest of the video shows Brandon Boyd singing the song surrounded by cheering women.

Monuments and Melodies is a two-CD compilation album by Incubus which will be released on June 16, 2009 through Epic Records. The first disc will feature 13 previously released singles from the albums Make Yourself, Morning View, A Crow Left of the Murder..., and Light Grenades, along with two new Brendan O'Brien-produced tracks, "Black Heart Inertia" and "Midnight Swim". The second disc will be a collection of rarities, including B-sides, soundtrack cuts, alternate versions, three previously unreleased songs, and a cover of Prince's "Let's Go Crazy". The album takes its title from a song that was originally released as the B-side to "Megalomaniac" and as a bonus track on international releases of A Crow Left of the Murder; it is also included on Disc 2 of this album. The album art was drawn by vocalist Brandon Boyd.
