The publication Pep Comics was a comic book from MLJ Magazines (later called Archie Comics after the company's most durable character), published from January, 1940, to March, 1987.

The first issue introduced a line of superheroes: The Shield (the first patriotic superhero according to Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide) by Irving Novick; The Comet (the first superhero to die in the line of duty) by Jack Cole; The Queen of Diamonds and Kayo Ward; The Rocket; and the Press Guardian. Non-super characters appearing in the first issue included Sergeant Boyle; Fu Chang; Bentley of Scotland Yard.

In the wake of Robin's introduction as Batman's sidekick, comic companies scrambled to endanger fictional youngsters by giving various heroes boy sidekicks. The Shield's sidekick Dusty first appeared in issue #11, in which the Press Guardian and Fu Chang made their final appearances. The comic continued to introduce other characters for some time, eventually phasing out their superheroes, discontinuing most by The Shield's final appearance in #65, as the comic had been progressively taken over by a character named Archie. Pep Comics lasted until #411 Mar 1987.

Archie Andrews first appeared in Pep Comics #22, in December, 1941, an issue worth at least $22,000 in mint condition as of the 35th edition of the Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide (May, 2005).
