Erin Matthews is een 18-jarig meisje uit Londen dat met haar vriendin Eliza op vakantie gaat naar Israël. Ze krijgt per toeval een oud dagboek van haar zeer zieke opa Len in bezit, met daarin het levensverhaal van deze man die ze nauwelijks gekend heeft. De man heeft een groot deel doorgebracht in het Britse leger in het naoorlogse Israël, wat toen nog Palestina was. Wanneer Eliza besluit om in dienst te gaan in Israël, ondervindt Erin het leven van zowel Joden als Arabieren in het huidige complexe land. De gebeurtenissen krijgen verdieping door het lezen in grootvaders dagboek en de verschrikkingen die hij meemaakte rond 1940.
