Una anziana apre una scatola di antica fattura da cui esce una musica antica. L'anziana, percependo una presenza maligna, tenta di praticare un esorcismo contro l'entità, ma prima che possa iniziare il rito con acqua santa e un martello - preso per distruggere la scatola - viene scaraventata da una parte all'altra della stanza da una forza invisibile. Il figlio entra nella stanza, trovandola incosciente sul pavimento.

La storia si sposta sulle vicende di Clyde (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), allenatore di basket, e Stephanie Brenek (Kyra Sedgwick), disegnatrice di gioielli, coppia recentemente divorziata. I due ex coniugi hanno due figlie: Emily, detta Emy oppure Em (Natasha Calis) e Hannah (Madison Davenport). Clyde presenta la sua nuova casa alla figlia, Em. I due, successivamente, vanno in un mercato delle pulci della zona, dove Em è attirata da una vecchia scatola, che ha incisioni in lingua ebraica: Clyde le compra la scatola, e...................

The basketball coach Clyde and his wife Stephanie divorced a couple of months ago and their teenage daughter Hannah and the girl Emily 'Em' live with their mother and spend the weekends with their father. One day, Clyde stops his car in a yard sale and Em buys an antique carved box and becomes obsessed with it. Em finds the hidden lock and releases an evil spirit that possesses her. Soon Clyde discovers that Em has a problem, but his annoying ex-wife and her boyfriend Brett do not pay attention to him and get a restraining order against Clyde...........
