Dablova past / The Devil's Trap (Frantisek Vlacil, 1962) torrent

With that seemingly simple concept, Frantisek Vlacil lays the inherent inadequacies of shortsighted religious fanaticism bare for all who care to see. The Devil’s Trap, the first of his three historical films, is set in an era where Holy Mother Church held sway over every facet of life. When an unprecedented drought strikes, and a single miller’s fields remain unnaturally moist, the ruling classes capitalize on fear mongering and naivety in an effort to regain their stranglehold on the Bohemian (now a part of the Czech Republic) economy. Refreshingly, Vlacil grants humanity to the serfs that would rise to Frankenstein-esque levels of paranoia in a lesser film. The congregation may not be willing to look to the ground, but they’re certainly perceptive enough to see when the lamb’s wool is about to be pulled over their eyes.
