australian gold miners look for gold in the highlands of papua new guinea. they find gold, but not before they become the first outsiders to come into contact with a million people who have been living in the highlands. the prospective miners brought movie cameras, rifles, and many other items unknown to these people until now. 'first contact' examines what happened after that took place.
'joe leahy's neighbors' and 'black harvest' follows the interactions between some of the highlanders and joe leahy, the mixed-race son of one of the gold miners and a papuan woman some fifty years after the first contact.
