De film is gebaseerd op de mislukte missie "Operation Red Wings", die op 28 juni 2005 werd uitgevoerd door Navy Seal Team 10. Het doel van het team is om Taliban-leider Ahmad Shah te doden. De missie komt echter al snel in het gedrang als het team nabij het Hindu Kush gebergte in een hinderlaag van de Taliban loopt.
