Bij het overlijden van hun vader erven Ernie en Lars Smuntz een keramisch ei, een bijna lege kist Cubaanse sigaren, wat verbleekte zilveren lepels, een oude koordenfabriek en een bouwvallig huis dat er plompverloren bij ligt op een schier onmetelijke vlakte. Enkele dagen later verliest Ernie alles wat hem nog restte, zijn Franse restaurant en Lars moet lijdzaam en platzak toezien hoe zijn fabriek wordt overgenomen door muitende arbeiders. Het 'krot' kan hen, mits restauratie, tien tot twintig miljoen dollar opbrengen. Maar de Smuntzen zijn echter niet de enige bewoners van het pand.
