Als Alex Murphy, een vader en politieagent, in Detroit neergeschoten wordt, blijkt hij het perfecte proefkonijn te zijn voor OmniCorp. Murphy wordt tot een half mens, half robot gemaakt, en is al snel weer in staat over de straten van de stad te lopen.
