Stranded backpackers in remote Australia fall prey to a murderous bushman who offers to fix their car, then takes them captive.

- Wolf Creek is set in a real location; however, the actual meteorite crater location is called "Wolfe Creek", and is located in northern Western Australia (WA).Wolf Creek was filmed almost entirely in South Australia (SA); however the aerial shots of the crater in the film show the genuine Wolfe Creek crater.

- The overall plot (tourists going missing in the outback due to their encounter with a killer) is loosely based on reality, specifically the cases of Ivan Milat (aka the Backpacker Murders in the State of NSW), Bradley John Murdoch (aka the Peter Falconio mystery in the Territory of NT), and Joseph Schwab (aka the Kimberley Killer in the northern part of the State of WA).
