No one can take exception to the wisdom that is eminently displayed in "Calamity Jane and Sam Bass," which opened at the Criterion on Saturday. It is that man's most loyal and dependable friend is the horse and that, beside this noble creature, woman is a snare and a jade.

Just look what happens to Sam Bass when he gets mixed up with dames after making a beautiful alliance with the fleet-footed "Denton mare." First the sheriff's sister tells her brother how Sam came by the horse and the sheriff, being narrow-minded, runs Sam out of town. Then the lady of the title, who loves Sam very much, blabs to certain parties regarding the virtues of the horse and ruins an honest swindle whereby Sam figured to clean up in a race.

No wonder that Sam, poor fellow, after losing both his faith and his dear horse, becomes a tiller and an outlaw and terrorizes the countryside. No wonder that he shows but slight affection for the loose-tongued Calamity Jane, who nonetheless strings along with him until his last mortal clash with the law. Not even Yvonne De Carlo, playing Jane in the style of Mae West, can fill the place in Sam's heart which was held by the "Denton mare."

A touching representation of the grief-stricken Sam by Howard Duff inspires one to realize the damage that can be done to a man when he loses his horse. Mr. Duff is a pitiful reflection of reckless despair and dark revenge. And Dorothy Hart as the sheriff's sister is the image of a cruelly fickle dame. Milburn Jones and Lloyd Bridges make properly sympathetic pals and Willard Parker is impressive as the stalwart upholder of the law.

The scenery, in Technicolor, is just as purty as Western scenery can be and the chases on horseback are dashing. Only trouble, in short, is dames.
