Dans la Nuit is one of only two films directed by French actor Charles Vanel. It is a silent film. As it was made just at the beginning of the sound era, it was almost completely ignored. Vanel was so disheartened by the film's failure that he never directed again.

This copy of Dans la Nuit is from a dvd made from a videotape. As you will see, the image quality is not so great, but you should be able to enjoy the film nonetheless. The rather odd intertitles are in French, but there are very few of them; if you know the basic story, you should be able to follow the action pretty well.

The soundtrack was composed by French clarinetist Louis Sclavis for the film's restoration in 2002. What a pity that it is just about impossible to find a copy of this film. If it has been restored, why not release it to dvd?
